You may think that the redevelopment of St. Mary's Island is bad news for the local wildlife, but the opposite is actually true.
Before the work began, the island was a fairly bleak, featureless landscape, with only small pockets of woodland. But now, a wealth of new habitats and green spaces has been created, together with green wildlife corridors that criss-cross the island. These corridors offer valuable feeding and breeding habitats for an abundant variety of creatures. Butterflies and insects, birds, amphibians and mammals are all now appearing in greater numbers across the island.
In the future, it is hoped that a community wildlife group will be formed to monitor and manage the islands wildlife and ensure their prosperity into the future.
